Lanthanum Carbonate is used for:
Reducing blood phosphate levels in patients with end-stage kidney disease. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Lanthanum Carbonate is a phosphate binder. It works by blocking the absorption of phosphate, which reduces phosphate and calcium phosphate levels in the blood.
Do NOT use Lanthanum Carbonate if:
- you are allergic to any ingredient in Lanthanum Carbonate
- you have a blockage in your bowels (eg, ileus, impaction)
Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.
Before using Lanthanum Carbonate:
Some medical conditions may interact with Lanthanum Carbonate. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
- if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
- if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
- if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- if you have constipation, diabetes, or stomach or bowel problems (eg, an ulcer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn disease)
- if you have a history of colon cancer, or have had stomach or bowel surgery
- if you have dental problems that make chewing difficult. You may need to crush Lanthanum Carbonate before taking it
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Lanthanum Carbonate. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
- Calcium channel blockers (eg, nifedipine) because the risk of serious stomach or bowel blockage may be increased

How to use Lanthanum Carbonate:
Use Lanthanum Carbonate as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- Take Lanthanum Carbonate by mouth with or immediately after meals.
- Chew or crush completely before swallowing. Do not swallow the tablet whole.
- Some medicines should not be taken at the same time as Lanthanum Carbonate; their effectiveness may be decreased. If you are also taking ampicillin, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor (eg, lisinopril), an anti-malarial (eg, chloroquine), a quinolone antibiotic (eg, ciprofloxacin), a statin (eg, simvastatin), a tetracycline antibiotic (eg, doxycycline), or thyroid hormones (eg, levothyroxine), ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take them with Lanthanum Carbonate.
- Medicines known to interact with antacids may interact with Lanthanum Carbonate and should not be taken within 2 hours of taking Lanthanum Carbonate.
- Take Lanthanum Carbonate on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it.
- Continue to take Lanthanum Carbonate even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
- If you miss a dose of Lanthanum Carbonate, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:
- Do not take nonprescription antacids while taking Lanthanum Carbonate without approval from your doctor.
- Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Lanthanum Carbonate before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
- Lanthanum Carbonate may interfere with stomach x-rays. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Lanthanum Carbonate.
- Lab tests, including blood phosphate levels, may be performed while you use Lanthanum Carbonate. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
- Lanthanum Carbonate should not be used in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Lanthanum Carbonate if you are pregnant. Avoid becoming pregnant while you are taking it. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away. It is not known if Lanthanum Carbonate is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Lanthanum Carbonate, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.
Possible side effects of Lanthanum Carbonate:
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Mild stomach pain; nausea; vomiting.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); severe or persistent constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramping or pain, or vomiting.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:
Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center, or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include headache; nausea; vomiting.
Proper storage of Lanthanum Carbonate:
Store Lanthanum Carbonate at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Lanthanum Carbonate out of the reach of children and away from pets.
